UV light

I bought a UV-C light thingy at Costco yesterday.(CleanWave by Verilux - $61.00 for a regular size wand and 1 travel wand and a case) It's supposed to "eliminate invisible viruses, germs, dustmite and flea eggs, allergens, mold and odors at home and on the road" even H1N1.
My main purpose is to take it to the library to sanitize the puppets and toys I use for story time. It says you can use it on computer keyboards, counter tops, pretty much anything that's not living.
So, how do I know if it's doing anything?
I did some research and found articles saying it works... but who knows?
Have any of you heard anything about this?

Ooh! That's pretty neat! Have you got a "clean your hands" station with alcohol cleanser at the entrance to storytime? Couldn't hurt. If I were there we could do some microscopy to compare before and after samples. Either way a bright dry atmosphere is certainly less likely to breed bacteria and viruses, and UV light is nicer than spraying the puppets with Lysol, uck. :)

Hi Natalie,
We've got alcohol cleanser all over the place and wipes for wiping down the computer keyboards.

Someone else said that having the puppets locked away in the closet for a week between sessions helps too. Do you think so?
